Hinged Floorplate (BDL)

Custom rifle bottom metal is a serious personal choice and at times, a heated debate among even the best shooters. The BDL style hinged floorplate has a clear advantage over the ADL, with the most prominent advantage being the cleaning process. The one thing everyone can agree on is the bottom line – cartridge seating, fast and smooth feed and a zero tolerance fit. Wyatts Extended Box Magazines have an edge by design – they are built to provide longer bullet seating which allows for a longer overall cartridge length. The Wyatts Extended Box has been reveled by many a shooter for feeding rounds quicker and slicker than stock. Even better yet, Gunware stocks your choice of long or short action, magnum and follower springs.

Note: Milling alterations to install this box may depend on your rifle thus requiring the services of an expert gunsmith. Give us a call! We will be happy to help you out.

Hinged Floorplate FAQs:

How do BDL bottom metals work on a hunting rifle?

Very well! Choosing a BDL hinged floorplate is a matter of preference and style. Gunware is pleased to offer Remington BDL bottom metal and Wyatts extended boxes. It’s important to note a hinged floorplate should never open unless you want it to. If your buddy is shooting a BDL that pops and dumps, he needs to control his finger or get his firearm to a gunsmith, pronto.

How do you load a hinged floorplate hunting rifle?

Through the top, one round at a time. Unloading is through the bottom – all the cartridges at the same time into your hand. Many experienced hunters will alternatively load through the bottom. While it’s not recommended for the novice, many seasoned shooters swear it’s the best way to load.

What are the benefits of having hinged floorplate bottom metal instead of detachable magazines?

It’s important when deciding on your bottom metal to understand that both detachable magazines and hinged floorplates have benefits- choosing one over the other is a personal preference. When using an internal magazine, a hinged floorplate allows you to open and empty all the rounds within seconds rather than ejecting each round individually. This is beneficial if you need to unload quickly, or have experienced a jam. Also, depending on your weather conditions, it’s nice to not have to rummage through the snow for that cartridge that just got away.
